Practical Information About Our Festivals

Here you will find festival-specific access information for each of the festivals Oxfam volunteers at, including details on roles, shift adjustments we can make, key distances and terrain.

This page will be updated as and when we receive key information however, please bear in mind that details may not be available to us until very close to the festival and as is inevitable, details may change last minute.

Click for more information on each festival:

Roles and locations are subject to change year on year at Download. This page will be updated as soon as details are confirmed.

Terrain:

Download Festival takes place in the hallowed ground of Donington Park.

The site has the benefit of existing hard standing and temporary trackway routes, in certain areas.

However, please be aware that the festival primarily takes place on grass fields with some sloping areas that are steep in sections.

It is also important to be aware that, during wet weather, the site is likely to become muddy and become more difficult to navigate.

You will need an access wristband to use the shuttle and it is subject to delays during peak periods.

Roles we undertake at this festival:

Pedestrian and Vehicle Gates – Checking Passes

Distance from our campsite to:

  • Carpark: The car park is adjacent to the campsite, but both are pretty large fields, so it depends on where you park and where you camp! The car park row closest to the campsite is reserved for blue badge holders.
  • Shifts: Up to 2.7km/1.7 miles - Glastonbury's incredible size is part of what makes it so special, but this does mean a lot of walking to get from A to B, including to your shift locations. The distances often feel longer still because the walkways can get congested at times, meaning progress is slow. The closest shifts are about 400m/0.3 mile from the campsite, and the furthest is around 2.7km/1.7 miles. There are a few locations even further away than that, but there is a minibus to help you get to those outlying locations. Because of the distances, we try to allocate everyone a mixture of shift locations at Glastonbury, but be aware that there are more far-away locations than close ones!
  • Arena: Glastonbury has a vast quantity of stages and venues to discover, and it would be impossible to list the distances to everywhere on site. Here are some of the key points:
  • Pyramid Stage VP1 = 1.3km/0.8miles
  • Other Stage VP = 1.8km/1.1miles
  • Theatre & Circus Area = 1.3km/0.8miles
  • West Holts VP = 1.5km/0.9miles
  • Green Fields = 1.7km/1mile
  • Woodsies = 1.7km/1mile
  • The Park = 2.7km/1.7miles
  • SE Corner Entrance = 1.9km/1.2miles
    Big Ground Medical = 600m/0.4miles
  • Festival Bus Station = 2.6km/1.6miles
  • Oxbox: In the campsite
  • Accessible Campsite: 1.7km/1mile

Terrain:

Glastonbury Festival is an outdoor event taking place on 1500 acres of farmland in Somerset. The main festival site is within a grassy valley, which does mean there are hills, and the terrain is uneven in places. There are a mixture of stone and gravel paths throughout the site and some temporary trackways used to create temporary roads.

It is important to remember that the weather can significantly impact the ground conditions. During inclement weather, some parts of the site may become muddy or waterlogged, and in hot weather, some parts may become dusty.

The majority of the festival site is in the open air, so it is important that festival-goers come prepared for all weather conditions.

The Oxfam Campsite is just outside the main festival perimeter, meaning we are a quiet haven from the hubbub of the festival site and very conveniently located for the car park. However, it means the distances to some stages and shift locations are quite large. The Glastonbury site has some hills, but the main challenge is often the crowds, which can slow progress and make it feel claustrophobic at times. IF it rains, the site is known to get quite muddy!

The following adjustments can be made to your shifts at this festival:

  • Role with level access: Available
  • No overnight shifts: Available. This means you will not be on shift between 22:00 and 04:45
  • Fully Seated roles: Limited availability
  • Role where you can sit occasionally: Available
  • All shifts at the same location: Available
  • Roles with minimal walking: Available
  • Roles close to campsite: Available, but please note that at Glastonbury, this means you could be up to 1.4km/0.9 miles away from the Oxfam campsite.
  • Roles close to a toilet: Available

Roles we undertake at this festival:

Venue Stewarding, Internal Gates and Wristband Checks, Arena Patrols, Campsite Patrols, Fire Towers, Campsite Hubs.

Distance from our campsite to:

  • Carpark: 2.4km/1.5 miles - We are fortunate to have THE best crew campsite location of any crew at boomtown, with a camping spot that is very close to the venues and all the other fun stuff, rather than miles away like other teams. This great location does mean that we are camping a very long way away from the carparks though.

The walk from the carpark to the campsite is about 2.4km/1.5 miles, across mixed terrain including two hills. To help with this, we run a luggage shuttle van that will bring your stuff from close to the carpark all the way into the campsite, and back again on the Monday after the festival. Please be aware you need to bring your stuff through the gate from the carpark yourself (a few hundred meters) and then we will carry it the rest of the way."

  • Shifts: Up to 2.8km/1.7miles - Most of our shift locations are in the arena at boomtown, which is about 800m/0.miles away from our campsite, however a few are a little further in the campsites.
  • Arena: 800m/0.5miles
  • Oxbox: 1km/0.6miles - The main Oxbox is located in the arena, but there is a secondary cabin [not 24hrs] in the campsite
  • Accessible Campsite: Next door to the Oxfam Campsite

Shuttle:

Internal Accessible Transport Service There will be a wheelchair accessible transport service operating on a loop around the Festival site with 2 access buses running the service. This service is only available for approved access customers and approved PA’s who have the Boomtown PA lanyard on. The PA must be accompanied by the access customer. They cannot make use of this service without them. Due to limited space we cannot accommodate other members in your group to use this service. Please note this is not a request service. You will be able to catch the accessible transport service from one of the dedicated Accessible Bus Stops across the site. Look out for the Accessible Bus Stop signs on site. Our Access Map published closer to the festival will detail the exact locations of the accessible bus stops.

Due to the nature of our site, many of the driving routes are also used by pedestrians. For this reason, the length of time it can take for the accessible bus route to run a full service and reach an accessible bus stop can vary. We are unable to provide a bus timetable or timed scheduled stops for this reason. Please be aware this is a limited service, there will be wait times during busy peak periods, this could be between 1 - 2 hours on arrival days.

Terrain:

Boomtown is a greenfield site set at a Matterly Bowl, across a dramatic collection of steep hills and valleys. There are some hard standing roads and metal trackways around the festival but most of the district streets and arenas are grass and the woodland venues are wood chip or sand. It's very unlikely you'll attend boomtown without slogging up and down a hill at some point.

The following adjustments can be made to your shifts at this festival:

Boardmasters Festival is located on the breathtaking Cornish Coast of Newquay. The event is split across two main festival sites; Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach.

Main arena

We have a mixture of sheltered and open-air stages and venues, however most of these are without cover.

The grounds are predominantly open-air grass fields with naturally uneven terrain. Due to its field location, there are no hardstandings in the main arena or campsites.

Within the perimeter of the Main Arena are a number of small to moderate hills and gradients, and some steeper hills.

Campsites

Grass walking routes and paths run through the campsites which can mean travelling over patches of mud. Where appropriate, matting has been laid to reduce the effects of wear to the ground in high foot-fall areas.

Please note: if we experience adverse weather conditions, ground conditions can become poor due to water saturation.

Distance from our campsite to:

  • Carpark: 200m/0.1miles (across a road)
  • Shifts: Up to 1km/0.6mil

  • Accessible Campsite: 650m/0.4miles

Terrain:

Shambala is an open-air event in grass fields. Most of the main site is flat and easily accessible in good weather with trackway running along the main thoroughfares however expect mud in wet weather.

The Enchanted Woods has areas of rougher ground amongst the trees, which may cause difficulties for some chairs and scooters even in good weather, and the path has a gravel surface, which can be difficult for wheelchair users to navigate. At night light levels are often fairly low as part of the art installations and the area can become quite crowded. Due to lack of vehicle access there are no accessible toilets in this area however there is one right next to the exit.

The Healing Area is in a meadow with long grass

Although the rest of the Shambala site is extremely flat, the Oxfam Campsite is an exception: Situated on an archaeological site, our campsite is unusually undulating, with ditches and mounds throughout. Access into our campsite is over a thin bridge and up a short, steep incline that can become muddy in wet weather. Wheelchair and mobility scooter users may prefer to stay in the accessible campsite because of this.
